Frugal Friday: Alternative Grain Mill

I'm joining Crystal at Biblical Womanhood for Frugal Friday.

After attending a breadmaking demonstration, and being convinced of the benefits of using whole grains whenever possible, I desired to do this for my family, but could not afford a grain mill, particularly as it's a single-use appliance.

So I bought a VitaMix. It is a high-performance blender that can juice, blend frozen fruits and ice, make ice cream, and even soup. And it can also grind grain! I like multi-taskers.

These are expensive new, but I found there to be several to choose from on e-bay. I bought an older one with a stainless steel canister several years ago and it's still grinding!

Hi Kim,

Can you tell me how much a vitamix is as opposed to a grain mill. I have been wanting to do my own grains, but have been deterred from the cost. If I could save money though. :-)

By looking at the completed listings on e-bay, it appears the price ranges from $177 to $400. The newer ones are made with two different containers--one for wet ingredients and one for dry. Just make sure you get one that has a container for dry ingredients.

Vitamix is a good blender & am surprised to know that it can also be used to grind grains. But now cheap grinders are already in the market. You can look at those products through Google search.
