We (read: my husband, the "chick magnet") have decided to have another backyard flock of chickens for the purpose of egg production. He picked them up this evening. Two Buff Orpingtons named Buffy and Maggie, two Wyandotte named Daisy and Ozzie, and two Americanas named Betsy (Ross) and Dolly (Madison).
Backyard chickens are very easy to raise. There are plenty of books available, such as Chickens In Your Backyard: A Beginner's Guide, The Backyard Poultry Book, and Keeping Chickens: The Essential Guide to Enjoying and Getting the Best from Chickens.
Aren't they cute? We've had a fun time holding them this evening.

Oh thanks for posting on this! and for the books....we've been wanting to do this and I didn't know where to start.
We have 2 beagles and IF we do this I would have to figure out a way to secure them away from the doggies!
Thanks again!

I will post a picture of our coop soon. You can easily keep them away from your dogs by keeping them in a portable coop. You can still move them around the yard so they can eat the bugs, clover, etc., but still be contained and away from predators.
